Wound care

At our Pediatric Wound Care clinic, we assess each wound to customize a treatment plan to aid in the healing process. We offer a variety of special wound care dressings and techniques and strive to educate the family on wound cleansing and dressing changes, which is essential for the healing process.

In cleansing a wound, the use of normal saline or saline based solutions are recommended, as well as plain soap and water. Cleansers such as hydrogen peroxide and iodine may impair in wound healing and is not advised for use of daily cleaning of the wound.

Providing a moist environment for wounds is essential to the healing process. This can be accomplished with a triple antibiotic cream or with certain types of dressings. Meanwhile, an overly moist environment may lead to maceration or breakdown of the skin which increases the risk of infection.
